Barcelona FC’s Argentinian forwardLeo Messithis Sunday surpassed Telmo Zarra as the player with the most hat tricks in Spanish footballing history, when he notched up the 32nd in his career in the 6-1 thrashing his side handed out to Rayo Vallecano in the 26th round of fixtures in the Liga BBVA, the Spanish First Division.
He therefore overtakes Zarra with the highest number of hat tricks of all time in a league team, and also gets further ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo on hat tricks as well as levelling with him on 30 goals as joint leading scorer this season.
No other player in a Spanish league side has ever achieved 32 hat tricks. 24 of Messi’s were achieved in the league; five in the Champions League; two in the Spanish cup and one in the Spanish Super Cup. Behind him come Telmo Zarra with 31; Di Stéfano with 28 and Cristiano Ronaldo on 27.
Messi also beats the record for the league itself, with his 24th – ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo’s 23 with Real Madrid. Di Stéfano and Zarra both got 22, and Mundo, 19.
Also, for the sixth season in a row, Messi has passed the total of 40 goals. Right now he has scored 41 in 38 games played – the same as he got last season when he had played 46.
