Paraguay v Jamaica preview: La Albirroja under pressure to triumph

Paraguay and Jamaica will both look to build on impressive opening performances when they meet in Antofagasta on Tuesday.

La Albirroja managed to rally from a two-goal deficit to grab a point against Group B favourites Argentina in their opening match at this year’s Copa América.

Substitute Lucas Barrios netted a late equaliser in La Serena on Saturday, giving Paraguay an unlikely draw.

Now, though, they will head out at Estadio Regional Calvo y Bascunan knowing the pressure is on them to make all the running against Jamaica.
That is certainly the case considering Ramon Diaz’s side’s complete their campaign in the group with a game against Uruguay – the nation that defeated them in the 2011 final.

Jamaica, meanwhile, earned plenty of plaudits, but no actual points, from their 1-0 loss to Uruguay.

A solitary goal from Cristian Rodriguez in the second half proved enough to settle a close encounter in Antofagasta.

Yet despite their tournament debut resulting in a loss, Jamaica coach Winfried Schäfer remains confident his squad can still go on and reach the last eight.

“We want to go to the quarter-finals, that’s why we came to Chile to play in the Copa America. Now we have to watch how the players recover,” he said.

“The next game against Paraguay is going to be very difficult. We know we can play good football and we hope against Paraguay we can play the same and have a little bit of luck.

“For the Uruguay match, nobody gave us a chance, but I hope the people in Chile and South America know now that we can play good football in Jamaica, though our main goal is preparation for the World Cup qualification.”
