Pep Guardiola has suggested that the competition for places at Bayern Munich was too fierce for Mario Gotze to succeed.
The World Cup-winning midfielder has been widely linked with a departure from Bayern this summer, with former club Borussia Dortmund touted as a probable destination.
Following his move from Dortmund to the Bavarian giants in 2013, Gotze struggled immensely to impress under Guardiola.
He played in 73 Bundesliga matches across his three seasons under the Catalan coach, netting a respectable tally of 22 goals.
The Germany international largely failed to fulfil his enormous potential though, with Bayern boasting many of the world’s great midfield talents in both central and wide areas.
Speaking after his Manchester City side’s friendly defeat to Bayern, Guardiola insisted that Gotze was a “top player”, as reported by the Daily Mail.
However, the former Barcelona hero believes that Gotze struggled to make himself indispensable ahead of his teammates.
Last term, Gotze endured injury problems too, playing in just 14 league games.
