Atletico Madrid icon Luis Aragones added to his legend at the club with some landmark goals for the Rojiblancos and Antoine Griezmann is hoping to do the same.
Aragones was the man who scored Atletico’s first LaLiga goal at their old home on the banks of the Manzanares during a game against Valencia.
The first European goal scored at the Estadio Vicente Calderon came via the former Spain coach when he struck against Malmo.
He didn’t stop there either and in Atletico’s first Copa del Rey game at the Calderon, it was also Aragones who opened the scoring with a goal against Mallorca, the first of four he netted that day.
Now, Antoine Griezmann has the chance to replicate those heroics by scoring the first goal at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in three separate competitions.
Although the Frenchman hasn’t started the season in the best form, he has popped up with goals at some crucial intervals.
He did just that in the first game at the stadium, against Malaga in LaLiga, and put his name in the history books, as Aragones did in October 1966 on the banks of the Manzanares.
Just as Aragones did by scoring the first European goal there against Malmo, so too did Griezmann with a penalty kick against Chelsea in the Champions League.
After goals against Roma and Levante, Griezmann now arrives for the Copa del Rey clash against Elche in good form and at no better time as he aims to make it three from three in tournament debuts at the Wanda Metropolitano.
