Vincenzo Montella got the worst possible start at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan as his Sevilla side went down 5-3 at home in the local derby with Real Betis.
It took just 22 seconds for Fabian Ruiz to open the scoring, breaking through the Sevilla ranks and firing a curling effort into the corner past a helpless Sergi Rico.
Set pieces and crosses into the box proved to be Betis’ weakness, with Wissam Ben Yedder drawing level as he found acres of space only 10 minutes later.
Then, a similar move allowed the visitors to retake the lead as Zouhair Feddal dived to score his third of the season with a powerful header.
Again, an aerial ball into the box proved difficult for Betis and it was Simon Kjaer who rose highest after a Franco Vazquez knock on to ensure that the scores were tied at the break.
More calamitous defending, this time from Sevilla, allowed Setien’s men to race back into the lead again as Riza Durmisi slipped in at the far post and Cristian Tello played a defence splitting pass to feed in Sergio Leon to extend the advantage.
Clement Lenglet capitalised at the other end as Betis failed to clear yet another deep free-kick, but the green side of Sevilla dealt the final hammer blow with an incisive breakaway in the sixth minute of injury time as Tello kept his composure to beat Rico after he had raced back from the other box.
