A European Super League is on the way

The greatest clubs in European football are working on achieving a set of circumstances that will allow the creation of a European Super League, and though such a competition has been talked about many times in the past, there’s a real feeling now of when it will happen, not if.

A general disenfranchisement with the various leagues over certain situations – such as that which Real Madrid experienced recently – is the driving force behind the move.

LaLiga is perhaps more under the magnifying glass than other leagues at the moment and their big two, Real and Barcelona, think in a very similar way on this initiative.

However, they are trying to take the necessary steps without being heard or rejected by those who run the national championship; a league that needs improvement – something that LaLiga chief, Javier Tebas, seems unable, or unwilling, to provide.

What happened with the ghost goal in the Barcelona-Betis game, followed by the suspension of Celta-Real Madrid 36 hours before the start – without any thought given or movement made (by the league) to try and get the match played – has sounded the alarms.

Discussions on the definitive creation of a European Super League have been ongoing since 1998 and so far the roadblocks have always been the cross-interests of UEFA’s teams and movements, such as the creation of the ECA (Association of European Clubs).

The clubs don’t rule out ‘holding hands’ with UEFA on the project, but they are now looking for a more or less immediate reaction to create a competition in the style and format of Euroleague basketball.
