Alonso crashes out of Abu Dhabi post-season test

Preparations for the 2018 Formula 1 season are already underway in Abu Dhabi but Fernando Alonso’s testing session was curbed by an accident at Yas Marina Circuit.

Seemingly losing control at Turn 17 after 11 laps of running, the Spaniard hit the barrier and damaged the front suspension of his McLaren Honda.

Alonso was fine to get up and walk away from the incident with a crane lifting his car from the tyre wall while the driver returned to the garage to discuss the crash with his team.

Whether he gets to run again in the day’s testing remains to be seen as the afternoon period was due to be run by test driver Oliver Turvey.

Earlier in the day, Alonso ran with the new halo safety component ahead of its implementation in 2018 with McLaren fitting a thin aerodynamic feature to the top of the part.
