Argentina want Copa América title after World Cup heartbreak

Lionel Messi wants Argentina to win the 2015 Copa América after the disappointment of losing the World Cup final a year ago.

The Albiceleste went down to Germany in extra-time during the Fifa showpiece, a result which left the Barcelona man still searching for a major honour with his country.

However Messi, who won the Golden Ball in Brazil, feels that his side have improved since that fateful evening.

“This group deserves to get something after the World Cup,” he said at a press conference.

“It’s a dream to get a [trophy] with Argentina. Individually and physically, we are better than we were at the World Cup. We have great players to lift the Copa.

“But we have to prove it on the pitch, because we have great rivals who want the same as us and it won’t be easy.”

Luis Suárez’s arrival at Camp Nou saw Messi shifted to the right side of their front three, and the duo combined with Neymar to help deliver a treble of Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey, scoring 122 goals between them in the process.

The Argentina captain revealed that he was ready to play a similar position for Gerardo Martino, even with his own self-confessed mixed experiences in the position at international level.

“Because Suárez, a No.9, arrived at Barcelona, this gave me the opportunity to go outside. It was normal that Tata also tried that,” he added.

“In the end, for one reason or another, I could not do much. But when he announced this team, I knew I was going to play outside.”

Argentina will play defending champions Uruguay, 2011 finalists Paraguay and Concacaf invitees Jamaica in Group B.
