Barcelona signings paper over the cracks

Atough week for Barcelona’s PR department has seen promising young players bought into the club, alongside a number of more troubling issues that have been batted back with varying effect by the Blaugrana.

First there was the ill-thought out social media campaign, #WeAreAllLeoMessi, following the conviction of their star player of tax evasion.

Although the player got away without a custodial sentence, the club felt the need to run with a campaign of sympathy, which largely succeeded in drawing more attention to the guilty charge and criticism of the club. Miguel Cardenal, president of the Supreme Council for Sports, censured the campaign and questioned its ethics.

In addition, the court case regarding Neymar’s transfer has seen the club take culpability and agree to a fine.

That amount, however, pales when compared to the loss of capital with regard to the failed Can Rigalt property development scheme.
