Bolivia hold on to beat Ecuador and boost their qualification hopes

Bolivia secured their first Copa América victory since 1997, holding off a second-half fightback from Ecuador to triumph 3-2 in Valparaíso.

La Verde made the perfect start when Ronald Raldes was left unmarked to head home a corner from the right in the fifth minute.

Martin Smedberg, who had provided the set piece for the opener, then added a second for Bolivia, curling a shot beyond goalkeeper Alexander Domínguez.

Ecuador’s Enner Valencia saw a penalty saved by Romel Quiñónez before Marcelo Moreno made no mistake with a spot kick at the other end of the field, putting his side into a stunning 3-0 lead at the break.

Valencia gave Ecuador a glimmer of hope when he slotted home early in the second half, and a stunning long-range effort from Miler Bolaños set up a frantic finish.

However, despite La Tri piling on the pressure in the closing stages, Bolivia stood firm to record just their third win over their opponents in the last 29 meetings.
