The Wolfsburg midfielder will miss Copa América 2015 but is now on the road to recovery after his operation
Central midfielder Luiz Gustavo has successfully undergone surgery on his right knee, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has confirmed.
The Wolfsburg anchorman was already ruled out of this year’s Copa América in Chile, but the 27-year-old, who has featured prominantly since Dunga took charge of the Seleçao nine games ago, is now on the mend.
Gustavo was operated on by team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar at the Materdei hospital in Belo Horizonte following Brazil’s 2-0 win over Mexico on Sunday and the medic claims the surgery went smoothly.
“Now he must rest so that he recovers as soon as possible,” confirmed technical coordinator Gilmar Rinaldi.
“Luiz Gustavo is popular among his team-mates, who are happy to hear that he’s okay,” he added.
The midfielder, who looked set to play a key role for Dunga in this summer’s Copa, suffered the injury in his club side’s DFB-Pokal victory over Borussia Dortmund in May, and has been replaced in the squad by Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred who had been on standby.
