La Roja supremo insists his troops will give absolutely everything they have when they play in front of their own fans next month
Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli has claimed that his team will play like “11 kamikazes” at the forthcoming Copa América.
La Roja will have the benefit of home support as they go in search of their first-ever success at the South American showpiece.
Hopes are high in their homeland given the presence of stars like Alexis Sánchez, Arturo Vidal and Claudio Bravo in the squad and also the team’s excellent displays at last summer’s World Cup.
Sampaoli is convinced his players will be lifted by the experience of playing on home soil and has promised that his side will give absolutely everything at the tournament which gets underway next month.
“We have the mentality that Chile will play with 11 kamikazes,” the 55-year-old coach told reporters at a press conference to launch his biography.“In other words, with 11 players that will give themselves up completely to come out and play.
“They’ll go out and play like they (the team) did at some point at the stage with Bielsa.”
Explaining the philosophy he has tried to instill into his team, Sampaoli continued: “It’s about trying to ensure that the group is more important than individuals, that what matters most is the flag and getting across the belief that whatever anyone does they should give it everything they have.”
Chile have been drawn in Group A alongside Ecuador, Mexico and Bolivia and will play in the opening match of the tournament when they face the Ecuadorians in Santiago on June 11.
