Colombia cool USA’s momentum

Colombia beat the United States 3-1 in a hard-fought match that sees both teams go through from Group A at the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017.

The result leaves both sides even on six points along with group winners Ghana, and the Colombians claiming the tie-breaker based on the head-to-head result.

It was a disappointing development for the Stars and Stripes, who came into the match without having conceded a goal, but fell behind in the early minutes as Juan Vidal was quickest to a long throw into the box that wasn’t properly cleared.

The USA were even on the night in the 24th minute as a super run and pass from Andrew Carleton set up George Acosta to finish in the box. Still topping the group at that stage, the United States tried to hang on to the draw, but Colombia grew in strength as the match went on.

Thomas Gutierrez forced a fine save from goalkeeper Justin Garces on the hour mark, and then Juan Penaloza found the breakthrough with a finely taken free kick seven minutes later.

Both teams went back and forth then, and it was Penaloza again who made the difference for the third goal, this time setting up Deiber Caicedo with a cross into the box in the 87th minute.
