Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid underwent surgery on the meniscus in his left knee and will be re-evaluated in approximately four weeks, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The Sixers believe that Embiid could return this season, sources told Wojnarowski.
The reigning MVP appeared to injure his knee late in the fourth quarter of last Tuesday’s matchup against the Golden State Warriors when forward Jonathan Kuminga fell on his leg. Embiid had missed the previous two games with knee soreness.
This was Embiid’s second procedure on the cartilage in his left knee. He underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a meniscus injury in 2017.
Through 34 games, Embiid was averaging 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists. The Cameroonian likely won’t hit the 65-game threshold to qualify for end-of-season awards.
The Sixers are 4-11 in the 15 games they’ve played without their superstar this year. Philadelphia is fifth in the Eastern Conference with a 30-19 record.
