Fred replaces Luiz Gustavo in Brazil’s Copa Am√©rica 2015 squad

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred has been confirmed as the man to replace Luiz Gustavo in Brazil‘s 23-man party for Copa Am√©rica 2015.

Just days after scoring in Wolfsburg’s DFB-Pokal final victory, the 27-year-old was forced to withdraw from the original list due to a tear in the meniscus in his right knee.

Luiz Gustavo underwent an assessment from doctor Rodrigo Lasmar in Granja Comary on Monday and will now require surgery.

His replacement has been confirmed by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) as Fred, who had been placed on coach Dunga’s stand-by list ahead of the tournament.

The 22-year-old, who was involved in the Seleção set-up for the friendlies against Turkey and Austria at the end of 2014 and previously worked with the current Canarinho coach during his time at Internacional, was pleased to be the man selected to travel to Chile.

“Unfortunately it is because of the injury to a team-mate, but for me the news is very good. I am very happy,” Fred told reporters in a press conference.

“I have already worked extensively with Dunga. He helped me at Inter, I helped him too. That has some weight, but I had a good season in Ukraine.

“I changed some things playing in Europe, and changed for the better. Foreign football is different, it helped me evolve. I matured, grew and behaved better.

“It‚Äôs very good for a 22-year-old player to feature in a Copa Am√©rica.

“At the moment I‚Äôm focused on the Copa Am√©rica. It is important and if think of other things it will unravel.”

Brazil will face Mexico in a friendly on June 7 in their first game back on home soil since World Cup 2014 before their first match in Chile against Peru in Temuco on June 14.
