Gago’s fitness a concern ahead of Argentina’s Copa América opener

Gerardo Martino has another injury worry ahead of Argentina‘s Copa América 2015 debut against Paraguay, with Fernando Gago suffering discomfort during training.

The Albiceleste coach already has Lucas Biglia in a fight to return to full fitness for the tournament, and the Boca Juniors man’s issue now adds to his woes.

Gago had to leave Wednesday’s practice session early, and underwent examinations to attempt to discover the extent of the problem.

It casts doubt over whether he will be available for their meeting with la Albirroja on Saturday.

Should the 29-year-old fail to make the match in La Serena, Éver Banega could be deployed alongside Javier Mascherano in a midfield role.

There was some good news for Martino, though, with Sergio Romero and Pablo Zabaleta expected to be fit to start at the Estadio La Portada.

Following their meeting with Paraguay, Argentina will take on Uruguay and Jamaica in their remaining Group B fixtures.

Argentina last won the trophy in 1993 and will be looking to secure their first title in 22 years in Chile.
