Barcelone vs Real Madrid must be one of the most difficult games to manage but in an El Clasico that showed little sign of tension, referee Hernandez Hernandez still wrongly ruled out the Welshman’s equaliser.
Both Sergio Ramos and Luis Suarez spent more time on the field than they should and the defender could, in truth, have been sent off much earlier in the game.
Here are a few key moments.
Minute 2 – Collison between Pepe and Sergio Busquets
Barcelona’s attack ends when Pepe and Busquets collide. The midfielder comes off worse but the visitors win the free kick. The incident is resolved well without cards.
Minute 4 – Wrong to make the offside call
Luis Suarez is in a legal position for the counter attack so it is a wrong call to stop play.
Minute 9 – Correct call to continue play
The Catalans come close to opening the scoring when Suarez wins the ball.
Although he is in a forward position, he isn’t offside because he won the ball from a goal kick taken by Claudio Bravo.
It is right of the assistant to let play continue.
Minute 23 – Foul on Lionel Messi and Ramos should have seen red
In the most controversial play of the match, Messi is brought down by the Real central defender.
It is a clear foul just outside the area and so not a penalty but Ramos should have been booked.
That would’ve been his second yellow and therefore a sending off.
Minute 27- Suarez should have seen red
The referee should have sent off the striker for hitting Pepe with his left arm, seemingly with intent.
The Uruguayan gets away with a booking instead.
Minute 43 – Real deserve a penalty
Javier Mascherano repeatedly grabs Gareth Bale before a corner. Penalty should have been given.
Minute 47 – Ramos is spared a second booking
Barcelona argue that the Real Madrid captain should be booked again for hacking down Suarez.
Minute 51 – Ramos in the thick of the action again
The hosts call for the defender to be booked, this time for a blow to Dani Alves’ face.
There is contact but Alves over-eggs it.
Minute 63- Neymar offside on the point of scoring
Good call as the Brazilian is just ahead of Pepe and Ramos when he receives the ball and is on the point of scoring.
Minute 69 – Ronaldo falls for the offside trap
Cristiano Ronaldo is one-on-one with Claudio Bravo but is in an illegal position when he receives the pass from Karim Benzema.
Minute 81 – Bale’s goal wrongly disallowed
The ref rules out a perfectly good goal by Gareth Bale.
He is not offside and there isn’t a foul on Jordi Alba so it should’ve been a goal to put the visitors in front.
Minute 83 – Good call to send off Ramos
Ramos smashes through Suarez with no chance of getting the ball so the referee has no choice but to book him again.
