Griezmann vs. Messi: Duel of the stars at the Calderon

The 40 goals scored by Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann last season were the main ingredients with which the Frenchman reserved a place at the table of LaLiga’s top two players, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Though it was not enough for him to be anything other than a dessert after the main course of the Ballon d’Or and The Best, the Rojiblanco won’t stop working to achieve his aims.

“I want to sit down to eat at Messi and Cristiano’s table,” he keeps repeating. And he will.

The 25-year-old hasn’t reached their level yet, but it’s only a matter of time.

Indeed, he joined both Ronaldo and Messi on a three-man shortlist for both of the main awards and has started 2017 in particularly good form.

In seven games, Griezmann has five goals, just one short of Messi’s six, and is ready to duel with the Argentinian at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

The Frenchman found the perfect recipe recently against Athletic Club, rescuing his team with a late equaliser, just as Messi did for Barcelona with a last-gasp strike against Villarreal.

Both teams’ paths to the Copa del Rey semi-finals have been engaging with both players coming to the fore there too.

Griezmann scored in both legs against Las Palmas in the cup and then helped to K.O. Eibar.

For his part, Messi was instrumental in taking care of Athletic and Real Sociedad in the cup and Eibar and Las Palmas in the League, and he’s also given his teammates three assists in 2017 already too.

On Wednesday night the stage is set.

Let battle commence.
