Diego Alves has withdrawn from the Brazil squad for Copa AmƩrica 2015 through injury and will be replaced by Fiorentina stopper Neto.

The Valencia keeper suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his right knee during los Che’s 3-2 victory over Almeria on Saturday, a result which ensured Champions League football in the club’s next season.

However, what should have been a joyous moment turned sour for Alves, as he learned he will require surgery and will subsequently not be fit to feature for the Seleção at the Copa América.

His place in Dunga’s 23-man squad will therefore go to Neto, who had already been listed as one of seven standby players by the coach. In a statement on the Brazilian Football Federation’s (CBF) official wesbite, technical director Gilmar Rinaldi wished Alves well after the setback.

“All of us in the technical commision want to wish Diego a prompt recovery and a speedy return to activities with his club,” Rinaldi stated.

The final Brazil squad will be confirmed at Granja Comary on June 1 as the nation begin their preparations for Copa AmƩrica 2015.

The Canarinho’s first match in the competition will be against Peru on June 14, in Temuco.
