José Giménez could be forced to sit out Uruguay‘s Copa América 2015 opener verus Jamaica in Antofagasta due to a muscular problem.
Following the 20-year-old’s solid season at Alético Madrid where he made 20 La Liga appearances and featured alongside compatriot Diego Godín in defence, the pair were expected to be Óscar Tabárez’s first choice centre-back pairing in Chile.
However, the coach may be forced to look elsewhere for the fixture against the Reggae Boyz with Giménez now struggling due to muscle fatigue.
A statement on the Uruguayan Football Association’s (AUF) official website read: “It is communicated that the player José María Giménez presented a muscular pain in his left hamstring. Scans were performed in which no damage was observed.
“He will perform progressive work in subsequent training sessions before reintegration to normal activity. In line with his development, he will rejoin the group.”
Should the 20-year-old not be passed fit for Saturday’s match, Sebastián Coates – who was part of la Celeste’s Copa América triumph in 2011 – will likely fill in for him.
Following their encounter with Jamaica, Uruguay will face Argentina and Paraguay in their other Group B fixtures.
