Katinka Hosszu made up for a disappointing 2012 London Games by winning her first Olympic medal — a gold — in world record time.
The Hungarian, who is known as “The Iron Lady” for her ability to swim multiple events in a short amount of time, swam the 400-meter individual medley in four minutes, 26.36 seconds, shattering the previous world record held by China’s Ye Shiwen by a good two seconds.
Team USA’s Maya DiRado took silver with a time of 4:31.15, while Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia claimed the bronze in 4:32.39.
Hosszu was a five-time champion at worlds who had never won an Olympic medal … until now. Though her husband/coach, Shane Tusup, may have been the happiest of all.
