After the astonishing destruction of Deportivo La Coruna on Wednesday, Barcelona coach Luis Enrique hopes to have seen an end to a run of poor results.
An eight-goal thrashing saw the Catalans answer their critics in the best possible way and the manner of the performance has turned the negativity that was surrounding the club on it’s head.
“It [8-0] was a perfect result because it reinforces our situation and hopefully it means we have overcome the doldrums” Enrique told reporters at Friday’s press conference.
The Asturian has given his players a target of winning all four games left of this La Liga season and the run begins on Saturday as Sporting Gijon, coached by ex-Blaugrana Abelardo, come to the Camp Nou.
“The team is set to win all four games we have left and that’s the target,” Enrique continued.
“There are four very interesting games ahead, both at the top and bottom of the table.
“Sporting with all of the limitations they’ve had to work with are doing very well.”
Lionel Messi trained normally on Friday after missing Thursday’s session with a sore foot but Enrique calmed any fears of a spell on the sidelines.
“Messi is in perfect condition after taking a knock against Depor.”
Former Sporting and Barcelona legend Quini will be honoured on the pitch before the start of the game, something that Luis Enrique expects will please everyone.
“I’m sure that the recognition of Quini will be a great joy for the fans, it’s great news.”
Responding to questions on Alen Halilovic’s situation – the youngster still on loan at Sporting from Barcelona – Enrique was clear as to the youngster’s importance.
“He’s started playing well and being important and he certainly improves things.
“It is an issue we have to deal with as soon as possible.”
Neymar’s exclusion from the Copa America hadn’t been an issue and wasn’t attributable to the Brazilian’s poor form according to the coach.
“Neymar won’t play the Copa America, that was a decision made by all parties.
“All we wanted was the best for the player, but Neymar obviously wants to represent his country.
“We have all come to the agreement and it’s best for everyone.”
