One of the best matches of the day will be played at Estadio de la Ceramica where Villarreal host currently 2nd placed in Serie A, Roma.
Villarreal are doing relatively fine in LaLiga, losing only two of their last 14 matches and only four so far in the season – however, it’s the draws that are bugging them, as Fran Escriba’s side have collected less points than they would like to thanks to nine draws in the domestic league. They followed the trend in the weekend match against Malaga (1-1) – although, to be fair, Malaga will have something to say about the referee who denied them a clear winning opportunity by not giving the penalty when they were 0-1 up.
Meanwhile, Roma are winning their Serie A matches – mainly winning that is, as they trail 7 points behind Juventus and look formidable with 50 goals scored thus far in 24 domestic league matches. Spaletti’s men are perhaps still dreaming about the title, but in reality they will fight for the Champions League direct place against Napoli who are behind their necks.
With a number of amazing players and very strong attacking potential in both teams, we could be in for a fruitful encounter. It’s still unclear whom will Roma field in this match as they can choose from number of decent solutions, while Villarreal will be boosted by Bakambu and Soldado shaking off their long term injuries.
Head to Head:
The sides have only met once in a history – playing two matches – in the 4th Round of the 2003-04 UEFA Cup. Villarreal went through thanks to their 2-0 win in Spain followed by 2-1 defeat in Italy where Sonny Anderson scored an away goal after Emerson and Cassano brought Roma ahead.
Villarreal went on to reach the semifinals of the competition where they went out against Valencia.
Team news – Villarreal
Roberto Soldado is still doubtful for Villarreal, although he was discharged from the hospital and is hoping to return soon. He should be ready for return leg if he doesn’t play today. Everybody else is available for the hosts, and we could see Villarreal fielding their strongest XI. Mussachio has returned from his injury and could play as well, as did Bakambu.
Team news – Roma
Alessandro Florenzi is the only unavailable player for Roma. We’re still to see if Spalletti decides to rotate his squad to give some players more playing time. Alisson could start between the sticks, with Paredes, De Rossi and Salah possible candidates to play in midfield.
Team streaks:
- Villarreal haven’t lost in their last 3 matches.
- There has been less than 2.5 goals in each of the last 7 Villarreal games.
- Roma have won their last 3 matches.
- Roma were the first team to score in each of their last 8 matches.
