Volkswagen Arena will host Wednesdayâs Champions League clash between Wolfsburg and PSV.
Dieter Heckingâs men defeated CSKA at home in the opening match of their Champions League campaign, but they failed to grab something from the Old Trafford clash against Manchester United. Anyhow, it has to be noted that Wolfsburg created a number of clear-cut opportunities to score in the 2-1 loss to the Red Devils.
PSV did remarkably well to beat star-studded Manchester United in the opening match of their Champions League campaign. However, the Dutch champions had a much bigger fish to fry against CSKA in Moscow and, as a result, they failed to grab something from the match (2-3).
On the other hand, Phillip Cocuâs men outplayed their fiercest rivals Ajax in the Eredivisie derby and rejoined the race for the domestic title. It is well known that PSV are a real force to be reckoned with at home, but the teamâs away record in the Champions League is anything but impressive. The Dutch outfit have suffered five losses in six away fixtures in the elite competition and it is no surprise they are considered underdogs in Wednesdayâs encounter against Wolfsburg. Luuk de Jong is the teamâs top scorer and he is widely expected to lead the attack for the visitors.
Head to Head
This is the first ever competitive game between Wolfsburg and PSV Eindhoven. Wolfsburg are unbeaten against Dutch opposition, with their previous home games against Eredivisie sides both bringing wins â 1-0 against Roda JC in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup second round, and 5-1 against sc Heerenveen in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage. Also, the Wolves are 27 Bundesliga fixtures unbeaten at home since a 6-1 loss to FC Bayern MĂŒnchen on 8 March 2014
PSV are seeking their first win away to Bundesliga opposition since beating TSV Eintracht Braunschweig in the 1977/78 UEFA Cup third round. That 2-1 victory remains their only victory in 17 trips to Germany, although they did lift the European Cup against Benfica in the 1988 final in Stuttgart. Also, PSV have won one and lost eight of their last ten away matches in the UEFA Champions League proper.
