Messi to Zidane: Their First Clásico

Every encounter between Barcelona and Real Madrid is watched the world over as some of the biggest stars in football go head to head.

Many of these star players from the two clubs are old acquaintances who have squared up to each other several times in El Clasico duels.

But there has to a first time for everything. Marca take a trip down memory lane to see how these old hands shaped up for their very first time.

Sergio Ramos – Real Madrid 0-3 Barcelona – 19/11/2005

This certainly wasn’t a memorable start for the Real Madrid defender. This was the day that the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu surrendered to the magic of Barcelona’s Ronaldinho who exposed Ramos’s lack of experience.

Zinedine Zidane – Real Madrid 2-0 Barcelona – 4/11/2001

Zidane will be hoping his coaching debut in El Clasico will be as successful as his first time as a player. His first El Clasico was at the Bernabeu which Real won with goals from Fernando Morientes and Luis Figo.

Pepe – Barcelona 0-1 Real Madrid – 23/12/2007

The Real defender helped his team keep a clean sheet and enjoyed an early Christmas present with a goal from Julio Baptista to keep them on top of the league. A sweet victory for Pepe at the ground of their fiercest rivals.

Marcelo – Real Madrid 4-1 Barcelona – 7/5/2008

Marcelo was on hand as Real heap misery on a hapless Barcelona who were having a shocking season. He had a chance saved but saw his team put four in the back of the net.

Sergio Busquets – Barcelona 2-0 Real Madrid – 13/12/2008

Busquets came on as sub for Gudjohnsen for the final 30 minutes of the game when Barcelona scored twice to seal a home win.

Andres Iniesta – Barcelona 3-0 Real Madrid – 20/11/2004

Wearing the number 24 shirt, Iniesta witnessed a brilliant performance by Barcelona. He came on as sub for the injured Henrik Larsson in the 72nd minute so was on the pitch for the third and final goal by Ronaldinho.

Gerard Pique – Real Madrid 2-6 Barcelona – 2/5/2009

A dream debut for Pique as part of the winning team who tore the Bernabeu apart. It was a superb start as Pique slotted in the sixth goal in the final minutes of the game.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Barcelona 1-0 Real Madrid – 29/11/2009

Wearing the coveted No. 9 shirt, Ronaldo came close to scoring, forcing a superb save by Victor Valdes. Ronaldo started but Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the hero to put 10-man Barcelona on top in an exciting encounter.

Lionel Messi – Real Madrid 0-3 – 19/11/2005

The teenager was already showing signs of greatness, but even Messi could not take the shine away from an outstanding Ronaldinho, who was given a standing ovation at the Bernabeu. Messi was replaced by Iniesta in the 70th minute.
