Messi: Uruguay didn’t want to play against Argentina

Lionel Messi has accused Uruguay of being overly physical againstArgentina in their Copa América meeting in La Serena on Tuesday.

La Albiceleste ran out 1-0 winners in the Estadio La Portada thanks to a second-half strike from Sergio Agüero , but the Barcelona star was critical of la Celeste’s tactics.

He felt that Uruguay were to blame for a fractured, bruising match as they were only focused on keeping Gerardo Martino’s men at bay.

“Uruguay set out to play a tough match. They did not want to play much,” Messi told reporters after the game.

“We tried to attack them from both flanks. They were expecting to recover the ball in order to play long balls.

“Luckily, we got Agüero’s goal and then we fought like we needed to.”

Argentina were held to a 2-2 draw by Paraguay in their Group B opener but moved to the top of the table following the Clásico del Rio de La Plata encounter.

Despite two rather unconvincing displays, the 27-year-old insists their aim is still to leave Chlie with the trophy.

“Our perspective is the same one we brought when we came here,” he added.

“The draw against Paraguay was a pity – we were leading 2-0 and we couldn’t win.

“However, now we’re were we want to be. We are on top and we have it in our own hands to qualify in first position.”

La Albiceleste’s final first-phase fixture pits them against Jamaica at the Estadio Sausalito in Viña del Mar on Saturday.
