This Monday, Manuel Pellegrini said that he knew “a month ago” that Pep Guardiola would be named the Manchester City boss for the next three seasons. “There’s been a lot of speculation about many things recently, but the club hasn’t done anything behind my back. I knew about this a month ago and I never thought that the speculation was positive”, the Chilean manager said in a press conference. “I’d like to end any speculation now, by announcing it, and that’s why I’ve communicated it to the press and the players. I told the club two weeks ago that I would release this information”, he explained.
The veteran manager, aged 62, currently has City sitting second in the Premier League, through to the final of the Capital One Cup, in the fifth round of the FA Cup and into the knock-out stages of the Champions League, but he’s set to leave the club in the summer despite having signed a contract extension until June 2017. “I signed for another year, but with a clause that the club or I had the option not to extend that contract. So I’ll finish here on the originally planned date, 30th June”, Pellegrini said.
After arriving at City in the summer of 2013, Pellegrini has won one Premier League title and one Capital One Cup.
