With Edgardo Bauza’s days in charge of the Argentine national team numbered, Jorge Sampaoli is inching closer and closer to the role and could be in charge by the time of June’s match against Brazil in Australia.
The 57-year-old is prepared to accept the post when offered it, which should be sooner rather than later given Bauza’s poor run of results and poor relationship with some squad members, and given that Sampaoli has the support of the country’s president Mauricio Macri as well as Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano.
Argentine FA president Claudio Tapia and the national team chief Marcelo Tinelli are due to travel to Spain in the near future, possibly this very week, but they know that it won’t be cheap to secure Sampaoli’s signature.
Sevilla would want 1.5 million euros to allow him to leave a year earlier than his contract stipulates, a fee which will gradually increase from July onwards.
