New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres is keen on staying with the only team he’s ever played for in the majors despite being able to test free agency after this season.
“I don’t want to leave from here,” Torres said Wednesday, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “I feel at home right now. I want to be a Yankee for life.”
Torres added that he’d like to get a new deal done before the 2024 campaign starts.
The 27-year-old also said he understands why the team hasn’t offered him a new contract yet since long-term pacts with former Yankees Luis Severino and Aaron Hicks didn’t work out in the past, per Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News.
Torres recorded 25 homers, 68 RBIs, 13 stolen bases, and an .800 OPS over 158 games last season during his best campaign since 2019. He’s also gone deep at least 24 times in four out of the six years he’s played.
