Former Celeste striker feels the loss of the Barcelona man will undermine his country’s hopes in Chile and backs Argentina to win
Sebastián Abreu believes the absence of Luis Suárez will hit Uruguay hard at the Copa América.
The 37-year-old played at the South American showpiece on three occasions for his country; in 1997, 2007 and then four years ago when La Celeste won the trophy for a record 15th time.
He is now retired from the international scene after a career that spanned 16 years and featured 70 caps and 26 goals.
Although Uruguay head into next month’s tournament in Chile as holders they will be without the man who did so much to help them win it last time out in Argentina.
Suárez remains banned from international competition after his well-publicised indiscretion against Italy at last summer’s World Cup.
Abreu feels that without the Barcelona star in their ranks, Uruguay’s prospects of retaining their crown have been severely reduced.
“Uruguay, with Suárez we are contenders (to win) and without Suárez we are protagonists,” he told Montevideo’s radio Sport 890.
Asked who he made favourites to emerge victorious next month, the well-travelled forward was in no doubt.
“How do I see the Copa América? Argentina are outstanding, they are the number one candidates.”
