Zidane signs on until 2018

Zinedine Zidane is now officially Real Madrid’s head coach. The Frenchman and his backroom staff penned deals just a few days ago to take over full first-team coaching responsibilities at the club. A deal that came a month later than expected after Zidane refused to prioritise signing a new deal over getting his new team ship-shape.

Zizou wanted to coach Real Madrid and all it took was a call to Florentino Pérez. He did not care about the financial conditions of his contract. Work came first, organising and re-shaping his new-look Real Madrid side. The money came second.

Zidane has signed on as Real Madrid first-team coach until 30th June 2018, the same length as the contract he had with Real Madrid Castilla. Of course, he has taken a pay rise, but there was no need to negotiate that. Zizou simply accepted the club’s offer, which also included the coaching team that work under the Frenchman on a daily basis.

On the day of his presentation, Zidane confessed that money was not a problem, that all he cared about was getting down to work with his players and that a contract would come in good time, as a reward for a job well done. That is exactly what happened and the Frenchman once again showed that he is Real Madrid through and through, just as he did when he relinquished the final year on his playing contract at the club. He did not believe he could continue to perform as Real Madrid deserved and simply bowed out.
